📅 Date: June 27, 2024 ⏰ Time: 14:00 – 16:00 pm 📍 Location: Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Allan Yap Theatre – UBC.

Session Organizer: Dr. Intu Boedhihartono, Associate Professor, Tropical Landscapes and Livelihoods, Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, UBC

Art is important in our lives. Art is a foundation of culture, well-being, environmental understanding, economic development, and other aspects of life. We aim to understand and strengthen the role of art in culturally and environmentally sustainable development.

We seek to understand how artistic expression and processes can create access to different ways of knowing, and bridge different views, among diverse groups. Artistic expressions and cultural processes may help bridge boundaries to enable sustainability.

We use diverse artistic methods to share perspectives, stories, and values linked to environmental sustainability. We will have several speakers and discussions on the use of visual arts, music, and other artistic & cultural processes during this conference. This initiative is based on collaboration between Canada and Indonesia.

Speakers:

  • Jeff Whiting (Artists for Conservation) – Sculptures and Paintings for Conservation
  • Michael Tenzer & I Putu Swaryandana Ichi Oka (UBC School of Music) – Music as an approach for collaboration and connection
  • Liza Wajong (Archipelago Foods) & Helianti Hilman (Javara) – Sustaining forgotten Foods for Biodiversity
  • Manuel Pina Baldoquin (UBC Visual Arts) – Hypertribx – a cultural initiative and digital platform for preserving Indigenous culture.

This session is a collaboration between UBC Vibrant Forest Landscapes Lab, Tanah Air Beta, Faculty of Forestry, UBC School of Music, UBC Visual Arts, and iBioS.
